Las Vegas loses football franchise as new league is formed.

In a merger of two football leagues trying to rebrand as one in the new year, the Las Vegas franchise did not make the cut.

The United Football League (UFL) announced Monday the eight teams competing in its inaugural season, set to kick off on March 30, with the league set to be divided into two conferences: USFL and XFL.

News 3 reached out to the communications team for the newly formed UFL to find out what would come of the franchise and its players. We will update this story when we get a response.

Yahoo Sports reports that several teams that didn't make the list of eight teams will be dissolved, including the Vipers, with the players under contract to those teams subject to a dispersal draft.

In a post on social media, the Vipers franchise wrote to its fans, "Thank you so much #FangGang for all of your support! What a ride it was."

As of Monday morning, January 1, the team's website was still active.

The team had a 2-8 record under coach Rod Woodson, a former NFL Super Bowl champion, in its lone season in existence. The Vipers were the second iteration of an XFL franchise formed in the Las Vegas valley. The Las Vegas Outlaws were established in 2001, playing their home games at Sam Boyd Stadium, before folding in the same year
