No more there: A’s formally drop Oakland from team branding
The Oakland Athletics are no more, officially. The team on Monday announced its “new brand guidelines,” and they have nothing to do with the city in which they played the past 57 years.
From now on, the team wants to be known as the Athletics. Or, as the team said in its news release said, “You may use ‘A’s’ on second reference. "NotNot Sacramento A’s. Or West Sacramento A’s. Or even Las Vegas A’s. Just A’s.
The announcement was made on the first day of the general managers’ meetings as a matter of housekeeping. Owner John Fisher’s plan once he identified Sacramento as his interim site, as part of his eventual plan to relocate to Las Vegas, was not to acknowledge Sacramento in the official team title even though the A’s will be playing in the state capital the next three or four years, at least.
Actually, West Sacramento. That’s where Sutter Health Park, the A’s new home, is located. They’re sharing the facility with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, the Giants’ top farm team.
