Just the facts, ma'am

Now, that there is a 4-day truce between Israel and Hamas, I think of the saying from Dragnet. Joe Friday would say, "I just want to get the facts, ma'am", So I present to you, the facts of the Hamas-Israel war! four-day truce between Israel and Hamas, based in the Gaza Strip, began at 7am local time.

The brief pause in the fighting, which has raged since October 7 after weeks of intense bombardment and deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The key components are a pause in the fighting, the exchange of Hamas captives for Palestinians held in Israeli prisons, and a halt to air traffic over northern Gaza during certain hours of the day and over southern Gaza entirely. Hamas will release 50 women and children, from about 240 people taken captive by the group during its assault on southern Israel on October 7.

In exchange, Israel will release a total of 150 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli prisons, whom Palestinians have long characterized as victims of an Israeli occupation that sweeps them into prisons with little pretense of due process. However, just before the brief truce for the 49th day in a row Israel had pounded the Gaza Strip. Following the collapse of medical and communication services in Gaza City on November 10, the Ministry of Health in Gaza has not been able to provide regular casualty figures.

However, according to the government media office in Gaza, as of November 22, the latest casualty figures following Israeli attacks are as follows:

Gaza

  • Killed: At least 14,854
    • Including at least:
      • 6,150 children
      • 4,000 women
  • Injured: At least 36,000
    • With more than 75 percent of them children and women
  • Missing: At least 6,800

The latest figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the West Bank is:

In Israel, on November 10, officials revised the death toll from 1,405 to "around 1,200".

Israel

  • Killed: About 1,200
  • Injured: At least 5,600

Residents in Gaza have flocked to hospitals and United Nations schools for safety, hoping that Israel will abide by international law and not attack those coordinates.

However, places of shelter and medical care have also not been free from Israeli attacks.

  • Over half of Gaza’s homes - 278,000 residential units have been destroyed or damaged
  • 311 educational facilities damaged
  • 87 ambulances damaged
  • 11 bakeries destroyed

Every hour in Gaza:

  • 15 people are killed - 6 are children
  • 35 people are injured
  • 42 bombs are dropped*
  • 12 buildings are destroyed

*Based on the first six days of the war, according to the Israeli army

Journalists killed

As of November 22, at least 53 journalists, mostly Palestinian, have been killed since the Israel-Gaza war began on October 7. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), 46 Palestinian journalists have been killed, as well as four Israeli and three Lebanese journalists.

Gaza has a population of about 2.3 million people living in one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Located between Israel and Egypt on the Mediterranean coast, the strip is about 365sq km (141sq miles).

Since 2007, Israel has maintained strict control over Gaza's airspace and territorial waters and restricted the movement of goods and people in and out of Gaza.

Following Hamas's attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to turn Gaza into a “deserted island” and warned its residents to “leave now”.
