Shootings in Lewiston, Maine. Robert Card, as a “person of interest" identified, police say.

At least 16 people were killed in a mass shooting at two locations in the city Wednesday night, and the death toll is expected to rise, law enforcement officials said.

Lewiston police identified Robert Card, 40, as a “person of interest” who should be considered “armed and dangerous,” according to a statement issued by the department.

The shootings took place at Schemengees Bar and Sparetime Recreation Wednesday evening, police said.

“CARD should be considered armed and dangerous. Please contact law enforcement if you are aware of his whereabouts,” police said.

During a late night press conference, Maine state officials did not identify the number of people killed or wounded.

“This is a very fluid situation,” said Michael Sauschuck, Maine’s public safety commissioner.

Law enforcement officials earlier said multiple people had also been wounded, the Associated Press reported.

Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston confirmed it was responding to a mass casualty incident.
