RFK Jr. apologizes to family for Super Bowl ad using JFK jingle

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. apologized to his family for a Super Bowl advertisement using an old jingle from the 1960 campaign of his uncle, former President John F. Kennedy.

The advertisement ran during the 2024 Super Bowl, which saw the Chiefs edge the 49ers 25-22 in overtime, and was paid for by American Values 2024, a super PAC supporting Kennedy’s third-party run. Kennedy apologized for any pain the advertisement may have caused, noting that he does not have any involvement or approval of what super PACs do due to Federal Election Commission guidelines.

“I’m so sorry if the Super Bowl advertisement caused anyone in my family pain. The ad was created and aired by the American Values Super PAC without any involvement or approval from my campaign. FEC rules prohibit Super PACs from consulting with me or my staff. I love you all. God bless you,” Kennedy said in a post on X on Sunday.

Despite his apology, a post of the video by Kennedy remains his pinned post on his X profile.

The advertisement took an old John F. Kennedy presidential ad and modified it to show images of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and to say to vote independent, rather than Democratic, in most instances throughout the 30-second spot.

Kennedy’s cousin, Bobby Shriver, publicly denounced the advertisement shortly after it aired and took issue with his mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, being included in an image in the video.

“My cousin’s Super Bowl ad used our uncle’s faces — and my mother’s. She would be appalled by his deadly health care views,” Shriver said in a post on X. “Respect for science, vaccines, & health care equity were in her DNA. She strongly supported my health care work at [ONE] & [RED] which he opposes.”

The advertisement cost a reported $7 million. It is part of the super PAC’s efforts to spread awareness about the third-party candidate and to expand his ballot access.

“The panicked DC power brokers are working overtime to keep Kennedy off the ballot because they know he can and will end their culture of greed and corruption,” the super PAC said in a post on X. “They offer us soaring inflation, forever wars, and chronic disease.”“RFK Jr offers us real change along with freedom, trust and hope. Like his uncle and his father, Kennedy is a corruption fighter, and it’s no wonder the DNC is trying every old trick and inventing new tricks to stop him. The public sees through it all and won’t stand for it.”

Kennedy has qualified to be on the ballot in Utah in November and is still working to appear on the ballot in other states.
